A Silver Winter and the Rhythm of My Days

Welcome 2014!
It's been awhile since I posted, and I realized January has nearly come and gone...yet our new life is still in it's first half.   We have had so many firsts...our first Christmas in Maine, our first winter in Maine, our first year of living each day how we choose.   I think our first four months here we were so busy setting up our home, preparing for the holidays and for winter , adjusting to this new way of life, that our days flew by.  After a quiet, lovely, Christmas, January brought with it some ice/snow storms which resulted in ice dams on our roof and some not-so-fun excitement in taking care of the aftermath, and now our days are finally settling into a lovely rhythm.  We stay quite busy but at a pleasant pace for the most part.  Mornings are spent leisurely watching the river and the birds while we eat breakfast and drink cup after cup of coffee. We then begin our day.   I've been back at my bread making.  He works on projects inside or out depending on the weather.  One day he might be cleaning all of the birdhouses throughout the garden, preparing them for spring.  Or building nesting boxes for the native bees.  Or using the snow blower.  We've been married now for more than 33 years and many years ago we happily divided household responsibilities, and it has worked well for us.  So my days are filled with more domestic pursuits...laundry, cleaning, grocery buying, but also knitting, reading, writing, baking and cooking.  Now and then when the roads are clear enough, we'll journey out together in the morning to a village by the ocean, have lunch and walk around before returning home and slipping back into our daily routines.  We try to take a daily walk under a sky that is sometimes silver, sometimes the brightest of blues, feeling snow crunch underfoot and watching the crows perform great acrobatic feats overhead as the chickadees sing in the nearby trees.   Our garden is full of our dreams for the springtime.  We spend late afternoons reading gardening books by lamplight and making plans.   Our neighbors are also turning out to be our friends.  We hosted a midwinter brunch recently, and out of that discovered one of our neighbors is an expert knitter and she has graciously started a weekly knitting circle.  And this icy chill of winter is the perfect weather for it.  I'm truly looking forward to spending time with new friends who also love the craft of knitting.  The days are growing longer, bit by bit.  I'm savoring these cold, silver days and the contentment of being cozy inside with good books, cups of tea, and a soft blanket across my lap.  I know before long the bright green of spring will be peeking through the snow and my silver world will be transformed once again...
'til next time my friends...I wish you the very best for the New Year...stay warm and be well!
